EXOTIC PESTS I am enjoying the stimulating and refreshing discussions of exotics. Here is my 2 cents. I want to point out that the world's worst exotic pest has not been mentioned. It has spread to more locations and caused more environmental destruction than any other exotic pest. It is now firmly established in places such as Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, United States, and can be found in most countries. In the past 500 years, it spread quickly from its home range. Growth rates as an exotic are often higher than when in the native habitat. When introduced into Tasmania in 1803, it soon eliminated the native population within a matter of decades. : : : We have found the exotic pest and it is us (Caucasians from Europe). : : : David South School of Forestry Auburn University, AL 36849-5418 dsouth@forestry.auburn.edu 205-844-1022 205-844-1084 (FAX)
