To all those of you interested in "life-cycle" analysis a set of reports is now available from Forintek Canada Corp. The Sustainable Materials Project has reached a major milestone with the completion of Phase II, the most intensive analytical phase of this multi-year project. The full set of reports provides 800 pages of up-to-date environmental impact information developed by a research alliance organized by Forintek Canada Corp. and comprising private, public and university researchers. The ultimate objective is to develop a systems model that will allow buildings designers, researchers and policy analysts to readily assess the relative environmental impacts of using concrete, steel and wood building materials. The reports cover: . More than 30 traditional and new structural building products . Raw resource requirements, energy use, water use, atmospheric emissions, liquid effluents and solid wastes . The resource extraction, product manufacturing and construction stages of a building lifecycle . Ecological carrying capacity effects of resource extraction . The current state of demolition waste recycling in Canada . A preview of the systems model . A description of structural input tables that link individuals products to complete building assemblies. For those unsure about which reports may be relevant, we suggest the Phase II Summary report price $60. For more information email Barbara Holder at holder@van.forintek.ca Barbara Holder
