David Orr continues his provocative dialogue: >My personal objective is to stop the destruction of forest ecosystems by >industrial forestry.... >So my proposed solution is, find ways to get people to stop buying [forest] >products, [industrial foresters] can get into some other line of work, and >the forests can survive... Leaving aside for the moment the various semantic issues concerning "destruction of forest ecosystems," would anyone care to discuss (intelligently and dispassionately?) the likely land-use consequences of the demise of the forest products industry in North America? This has been discussed at least peripherally in the past by Orr, South, and others but perhaps not as the focus of a thread. In my part of the country (the rural South), I would expect industrial forest land to be used in some other commercial venture (as opposed to reverting to later-successional forest with no particular use), though I don't know what venture, and I'm not enough of an economist to speculate further. wade harrison summerville sc 72053.3000@compuserve.com
