There is an urgent need for information on the state and condition of vegetative cover, as this is an essential input for guiding natural resource and conservation decision-making, as well as for researching climate change, biodiversity, and other issues related to the global environment. The World Resources Institute (WRI) needs your help in assembling this information so that it is easily accessible for all interested parties. WRI, with the support of the U.S. Forest Service, is launching a survey of existing and potential vegetation assessments available at national, regional, and global scales. The purpose of this project is to compile a meta-metadata catalogue of international vegetation/forestry monitoring activities, both completed and ongoing, which can serve as a reference to others in the information field seeking maps and contacts for specific areas of the world. If your organization possesses maps or is engaged in the mapping of current or potential vegetation and your data sets were completed after 1980 and are available for countries, large areas, and regions, please briefly respond by sending your name, the name of your organization, your phone number, and a fax number to Daniel Nielsen at the World Resources Institute (e-mail: DANIELN@WRI.ORG). Individuals completing this survey with relevant information will receive a free copy of the meta-database on diskette.
