Subject: CFP - Call for participation and papers:
          Pre-Congress Workshop in Finland 1995

INTERNET APPLICATIONS AND ELECTRONIC INFORMATION RESOURCES
IN FORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES

This is a preliminary announcement and call for papers for a workshop
with the above title to be held in Finland in Joensuu at the European
Forest Institute on August 1-5, 1995, which is the week before the
IUFRO World Congress. The workshop is jointly sponsored by the IUFRO
working parties WP 4.11-03 "Computers", and the subject group S6.03-00
"Information systems and terminology".

The workshop will consist of two parts:
(i) papers on Internet applications related to forest science (1-2 days)
(ii) a tutorial about computer networking (2-3 days).
Special attention will be given to solutions which may help to overcome
the unequal regional capabilities of existing communication networks.
Thus we are currently seeking funds for subsidizing the cost for
participants from less advantageous countries.

For the symposium, we seek papers that describe the use of Internet and
its information resources in forestry and environmental sciences. The
papers will be published in a proceedings volume. The topics include,
but are not limited to:

- Descriptions of work in progress in institutions
- Use and access of library software across networks
- Virtual libraries
- Electronic publishing in the networks
- Activities of special interest networks
- Distributed public domain databases
- Network software and applications
- Enabling network access at remote sites
- Distance learning and multimedia

Tutorial will cover the technological setting required for Internet
access. Topics that will be covered include the various Internet
communication protocols such as email, usenet news, telnet, ftp,
Gopher, World Wide Web, and WAIS. We will also cover the issues in
setting up server sites, making your databases publicly accessible,
and authoring network multimedia.

The important date:

Papers have to be submitted through electronic mail in HTML format and
uuencoded GIF images to the organiser by May 1st, 1995. Alternatively,
a solid URL pointer to the paper can be provided. The papers will be
posted in the World Wide Web as they are received and are subject to
public review up to the time of the World Congress.

Further details of the registration and the costs will follow
in due time.

Sincerely, Alois Kempf and Hannu Saarenmaa
