To: vigyan!forest@nic.funet.fi 10th Oct 1994 Dear Researchers sub : URBAN FORESTRY At Bangalore, India, study on Urban forestry has been taken up by the Indian Institute of Science. The varied vegetation in different environs will be studied. The different categories of environs for study are residential areas, industrial areas, institutions and parks. These environs are further classified into new and old establishments to study the various species prevalent in the locality. The residential areas will further be categorised into new and old extentions. In these extentions, the area will be subdivided into lower and higher socio-ecconomic strata and the varied species in these different categories will be analysed. In India, temples are regarded as sacred land. The vegetation in temples are maintained as sacred grooves and the vegetation is unique in diffferent temples according to the diety. Hence a study of trees in temples have also been taken up. In this survey, we are engaging undergraduate Botany students after a training program during their vacations. This study will give an insight of the biodiversity in the Bangalore urban area. Further, it is intended to study the carbon sequestration of urban trees. The study of the change in urban forest cover due to urbanization will be undertaken based on maps by remote sensing images. I have come across references, where similar work has been done in Kenya, Hong kong, Helsinki, Indonesia and others. I request researchers in the same field to share their findings and view, which will help me in our research. In anticipation, With Thanks, Dr.P.
