Kim Iles asked me to post this to an appropriate forestry-related network. Subject : 3P sampling with a handheld recorder and computer. A new product to facilitate 3P sampling is being marketed by Holmboe Enterprises (phone in Canada : 604 753 8095, FAX 604 756 2290). It is a handheld HP Palmtop computer that take tree diameter, calculates a KPI from it, stores data and tells you when to sample a tree. In addition, it incorporates a number of innovations to get rid of "sure-to-be-measured trees", stratifies, carries extra data about the estimated trees and gives you statistics and results right on the spot, as well as stock and stand tables. The PCMCIA card gives it lots of storage and computing capacity, and the HP palmtop has LOTUS built in. It is used in the John Bell Variable Probability Cruising course at Oregon State University each year, and they are quite happy with the technical and practical aspects of it. Kim Iles, who has no financial interest in the product, will provide a tecnhical recommendation upon request (phone and FAX in Canada : 604 753 8095). +--------------------------------------------------------+ + + + Timothy G.
