Telephone 503/737-2329 Fax 503/737-2668 Symposium objective: The purpose of this symposium is to explore the philosophical basis for the use of risk assessment in solving ecological problems. Interest in risk assessment as an important tool for informed policy and decision-making in the environmental arena has recently increased with the introduction this year of the Risk Assessment Improvement Act, which seeks to strengthen and coordinate the scientific basis used for such assessments. This symposium will seek to explore the philosophical basis of what this could mean in the environmental arena in a neutral, impartial forum, seeking neither to detract nor support. The program hopes to address such questions as, "Is ecological risk assessment ecological triage, or a necessary decision tool?", "Is ecological risk assessment used to disenfranchise the electorate or as a necessary analytical tool to evaluate difficult tradeoffs?", "Can principles of human health risk assessment be appropriately applied to ecological risk assessment?", "Does risk assessment do what is fundamentally a public choice?" Target Audience: The symposium will be of interest to sociologists, biologists, environmental groups, economists, policymakers, and anyone interested in risk assessment as it applies to environmental issues. Note that this is not inteded as a technical meeting presenting risk assessment methodology, but rather a debate about the usefulness of scientific risk assessment as a tool in the environmental arena. Arrangements: All sessions will be at the LaSells Stewart Conference Center on the Oregon State University campus, Corvallis, Oregon. Maps of Corvallis and campus will be mailed to participants. Course Fee: The cost for the symposium is $110. The symposium fee includes cost of instruction, all course materials, coffee breaks and refreshments.
