POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing Specialist CLASSIFICATION: Scientist/Senior Scientist REFERENCE NUMBER:4512-024/994 CLOSING DATE: October 14, 1994 ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Participate in a team oriented research project assessing the carbon dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems at regional scales, including the effects of land use and climate change. The current research focus is to quantify the effects of carbon dynamics of forests in southeast Mexico and Brazil. The primary duties will be: (1) perform spatial analysis and modeling within a GIS environment; (2) use various remote sensing data and techniques to assess land cover and land-use change; (3) design summary maps and diagrammatic materials; (4) design and implement quality control procedures for spatial modeling; and (5) write research reports and publications. The research will be conducted on an extensive distributed network of 30 UNIX workstations (primarily Sun Sparc, with color displays and 28-64 Mbytes of memory), with several color printers and plotters, CD readers, 8mm, 1/4" and 1/2" tape systems, and 65 gigabytes of disk storage. This network supports the public domain software from the Free Software Foundation (Gnu), as well as IPW, GRASS. PV-WAVE, PCI, TecPlot, and ARC/INFO, SAS, S+, Lotus, Troff, Eroff, LaTex, Wordperfect, Mathematica, and Island Graphics Software. QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum requirements include: (1) MS/MA in geography, ecology, forestry, range science or related field. The MS/MA may be substituted by a BS and 3 years of experience; (2) experience using GIS software such as GRASS and ARC/INFO; (3) experience using remote sensing processing software such as PCI; (4) experience using image processing and data display software such as IPW and PV-WAVE; (4) experience in programming using C and FORTRAN; (5) experience operating in the UNIX environment; (6) experience with database management software; and (7) demonstrated research experience in a team environment. Applicants must provide at least three professional references that will confirm job responsibilities and organizational contributions. Preferred candidates will possess experience with: (1) modeling of ecological processes and properties, especially carbon dynamics; (2) experience with computer modeling in a GIS environment including developing the input databases, managing the output data layers, and displaying and analyzing the results; (3) publishing in the peer-reviewed literature; and (3) knowledge of Spanish or Portuguese. Physical requirements: The ability to use a computer keyboard and to read a computer screen and detailed map data. The ability to travel independently.
