The following three positions relating to Hardwoods Research
are available with the British Columbia Ministry of Forests,
Research Branch for the period of October 17, 1994 to March
31, 1995. These positions are funded by the British
Columbia Forest Renewal Plan.
1) Position: Research Scientist - Hardwood and Mixedwood
Dynamics
Type of Opportunity: Auxiliary (October 17, 1994 - March
31, 1995)
Ministry/Branch: British Columbia Ministry of Forests,

Location: Prince George (Red Rock Research Station)
Salary: $1772.02 - $2134.77 (biweekly)
(Interview expenses will be reimbursed for candidates
invited to interviews)
Duties: Responsible for the development, initiation and
conduct of collaborative research dealing with important
hardwood and mixedwood management issues (primarily related
to silviculture); for maintaining and conveying up-to-date
knowledge of hardwood and mixedwood management as it applies
to B.C. species; for providing leadership and assistance to
hardwood and mixedwood researchers, and for performing other
duties as directed.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in forest science; extensive
experience in forestry research including significant
journal contributions to the fields of hardwood and/or
mixedwood silviculture and ecology. Applicants with an
M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline, plus 3 years related
experience may be considered. A sound knowledge of forestry
with understanding of hardwood and mixedwood silviculture,
ecology, and stand dynamics. Knowledge and familiarity with
stand and ecosystem models. Demonstrated ability to plan
and direct scientific work to achieve research objectives
and to work cooperatively with other scientists in research
teams. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical
information clearly and convincingly to various audiences,
in writing and orally. Competence in experimental design
and biostatistical methods with a working knowledge of data
analysis techniques.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in tree physiology; post-graduate
training in woody plant nutrition physiology and diagnostic
methods, soil chemistry, or equivalent combinations of
training and experience; extensive experience and
significant journal contributions in the field of hardwood
physiology. Applicants with a M.Sc. in an appropriate
discipline, plus 3 years related experience may be
considered. A sound knowledge of forestry with
understanding of ecology, silvics and silviculture of
hardwood species. Thorough understanding of hardwood tree
physiology, plant-soil interactions and environmental
influences. Demonstrated ability to plan and direct
scientific work to achieve research objectives and to work
cooperatively with other scientists in research teams.
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information

genetics and adaptive physiology of hardwood species in
collaboration with others; for maintaining and conveying up-
to-date knowledge of hardwood genetics as it applies to B.C.
species; for providing leadership and assistance to hardwood
and mixedwood researchers, and for performing other duties
as directed.
Qualifications: Ph.D. in forest genetics; post-graduate
training in statistics, population and quantitative
genetics, plant breeding, or equivalent combinations of
training and experience; extensive experience and
significant journal contributions in hardwood genetics.
Applicants with a M.Sc. in an appropriate discipline, plus 3
years related experience may be considered. A sound
knowledge of forestry with understanding of ecology, silvics
and silviculture of hardwood species. Thorough
understanding of hardwood tree physiology, plant-soil
interactions and environmental influences. Demonstrated
ability to plan and direct scientific work to achieve
research objectives and to work cooperatively with other
scientists in research teams. Demonstrated ability to
communicate technical information clearly and convincingly
to various audiences, in writing and orally. Thorough
knowledge of population and quantitative genetics, plant
breeding theory and data analysis with demonstrated ability
and achievement. Familiarity with tree physiology and with
the application of physiological techniques to studies of
genetic variation and adaptation is desirable.
