            Meeting and Course Announcement
              "Making Forest Policy Work"
                   Oxford University
                       July 1995

               Oxford Forestry Institute
International Institute for Environment and Development
SGS Forestry

                   3 - 7 July 1995:
                Five one-day seminars,
         focusing on key forest policy issues.

                  10 - 28 July 1995:
              Three weeks of coursework,
on developing and implementing forest policy solutions.

The seminars and course confront the central issues of forest policy and
practice in an increasingly challenging global environment. Speakers and
participants are drawn from a diverse array of disciplines and
organizations: academia, government agencies, non-government
organisations, and private enterprise.

The series of one-day seminars (3-7 July) focus on key forest policy
issues, each addressed by leading authorities. The scope will be global.
The overview provided by these seminars will be especially valuable to
decision makers who require briefing and analysis of issues and trends
important to forest policy. Themes are:

      - the political and practical challenges to sustainable
      development;
      - the economic context and its consequences;
      - identifying and practising sustainable forestry;
      - working with people;
      - envisioning the future.

You can choose to participate in the whole week, or in any part of it.

The coursework (10-28 July) will focus on processes and actions which
help develop and implement forest policy solutions. It comprises
seminars, workshops and guided study that follow from key themes
addressed in the preceding week, and will be conducted principally by
staff of the OFI, IIED and SGS Forestry. The course will be most
valuable to those directly concerned with making forest policy and
practice more effective. Participants will gain most from following the
entire programme, but it will be possible to join the course for lesser
periods.

The programme of Weeks 2-4 will comprise:
      - understanding the policy process:
      successes, failures, key actors and alternative approaches;
      - analysis of a major case study;
      - project assessment and policy implementation.

Participation in the full four week programme should especially benefit
those whose circumstances limit their exposure to analysis of
contemporary issues and discussion of innovative responses.

Speakers include Ed Barbier, Steve Bass, Andrew Bennett, Josh Bishop,
Neil Byron, Jeff Burley, Robin Cutler, Chris Cox, Don Gilmour, Hans
Gregersen, Diana Hunt, Sunita Narain, Tim Peck, Duncan Poore, Jules
Pretty, Jack Putz, Richard Sandbrook, Jeff Sayer, Tim Synnott, Francis
Sullivan, Koy Thomson, Crispin Tickell, Chris Upton.
