Position vacant: Quantitative Geneticist - Australia

QUANTITATIVE GENETICIST

$42 $57 k Salary (Australian) + Superannuation

CSIRO Division of Forestry

Mt Gambier, South Australia, Australia

The Division of Forestry conducts multidisciplinary research to assist
forest management and the forest industry in Australia and is organised in
programs relating to major industry sectors.

We are seeking to appoint a Quantitative Geneticist to join the Division's
Plantation Forest Research Centre (PFRC) in Mount Gambier. You will join a
multidisciplinary group consisting of soil scientists, nutritionists and
physiologists which is focussing on sustained and efficient production of
radiata pine. PFRC has research support and enjoys a high standing for its
contribution to science and the forest industry. The long term research on
breeding pines at Mount Gambier culminated with the formation of the
Southern Tree Breeding Association (STBA), Australia's only tree breeding
co operative, linking government and private bodies. Genetics and breeding
work on pine in Canberra is now centred on quantitative genetics, breeding
strategy and molecular biology.

You will work within the Softwood Plantation Program and will be expected to
work closely with STBA on problems related to commercial breeding programs
in pines. These could include estimation of genetic parameters such as
age dependent genetic correlations, genetics of wood properties and
disease resistance and continuing development of the STBA's breeding
strategy, currently a subdivided nucleus breeding strategy.

You must have a PhD or equivalent qualification in quantitative genetics or
closely related fields, and be able to demonstrate proven experience in
developing and applying breeding strategies. You should have excellent
communication skills in order to interact with the industry. You will be
offered an indefinitely tenured position within CSIRO, but the location of
this work at Mt Gambier may be reviewed after a period of time.

More information on research aspects of the position can be discussed with

Dr E K S Nambiar (Program Manager Tel +61 6 281 8311,
Sadu.Nambiar@cbr.for.csiro.au). Details regarding PFRC and the city of Mount
Gambier which is located in the centre of one of the major pine growing and
utilisation areas in Australia can be obtained from Dr David Sheriff (Tel
+61 87 23 8212, email messages can be sent to the poster,
julianm@adl.dms.csiro.au, and will be forwarded to Dr Sheriff)

Your application, which must address the selection criteria, provide the
names and contact details of at least two professional referees, and,
quoting reference 94/0363 should be forwarded to:
