{ In part, the thinnings will be conducted according to
{ typical standards, involving removal only of the
{ merchantable boles, to 4" tops for sawlogs and to 2" tops
{ for pulpwood. However, a yard-top-with-last-log
{ prescription will be applied in some cases.
{
{ I have been successful in locating information describing
{ biomass of total components (foliage, branches, bark, stem),
{ and information describing weights of unmerchantable tops.
{ I have not, however, come across a satisfactory way of
{ separating out that portion of the crown (foliage, branches
{ and bark) that would be yarded out with the top.
{
{ I would appreciate input from anyone out there who might be
{ aware of approaches that have been taken or might be taken
{ to the same or similar questions.
You should talk to Brad Smith of the USDA Forest Service. When
he was at the N. Central Forest Experiment Station, he authored
"Factors and Equations to Estimate Forest Biomass in the North
Central Region" Res. Pap. NC-268. The equations in that
publication allow you to separate wood from bark and top from
bole. Brad is in Washington now @ 202-205-0841.
