Dear forest-netters,
I am attempting to estimate the amounts of organic matter
(biomass) to be removed from the site in a commercial
thinning study, including stemwood, branches and foliage.
In part, the thinnings will be conducted according to
typical standards, involving removal only of the
merchantable boles, to 4" tops for sawlogs and to 2" tops
for pulpwood. However, a yard-top-with-last-log
prescription will be applied in some cases.
I have been successful in locating information describing
biomass of total components (foliage, branches, bark, stem),
and information describing weights of unmerchantable tops.
I have not, however, come across a satisfactory way of
separating out that portion of the crown (foliage, branches
and bark) that would be yarded out with the top.
I would appreciate input from anyone out there who might be
aware of approaches that have been taken or might be taken
to the same or similar questions.
Thanks in advance.
