I am curious as to how they plan to measure "environmentally passionate".
Is this done by a test of some sort? For instance, talking
passionately to the selection committee. This is such a strange term
to put in a job announcement. In fact, it is down right "odd". It
clearly indicates that this person will be less scientist than
environmentalist. This person will be unlikely to have an objective
skill in the area of ecology. Why not use the word "com"passionate or
"sympathetic"....but passionate? This is very odd, indeed.

1>NNOUNCEMENT
The Greater Ecosystem Alliance seeks a skilled and
environmentally-passionate scientist to provide technical
oversight of US Forest Service implementation of President
Clinton's Northwest Forest Plan. The job involves: 1)
participation in Watershed Assessment, Adaptive Management
Area, Province Team, and other agency processes; 2)
technical review of proposed federal projects, including
timber sales; 3) developing records for appeals and
litigation; 4) training and assisting grassroots
conservationists to expand their ability to apply
conservation science. The position will be based in GEA's
office in Bellingham, but with responsibilities throughout
the western Washington Cascades and Olympics. GEA works
to protect biodiversity and wildness in the large
ecosystems of British Columbia and the Northwest states.
GEA combines science and advocacy to pursue scientifically
informed but aggressive campaigns for environmental
protection.
Qualifications
Candidates should hold a Masters Degree in Forestry,
Ecology, Conservation Biology, or other discipline
providing detailed understanding of terrestrial wildlife
and forest ecosystem processes and functions. Excellent
communication skills are required, as is a very strong
commitment to biodiversity protection. Highly desirable,
but not required, is: 1) experience in grassroots
environmental advocacy and previous Forest Service (or
comparable agency) employment; 2) understanding of
environmental law and policy, including Option 9; and 3)
working knowledge of GIS, including ARC/Info and ARC/View.
Applicants from within the Pacific Northwest, being
familiar with the ecosystems, organizations, and politics
of the region will be given preference.
