The Division of Forest Science and Technology is one of twelve in the
CSIR, a statutory science council.  The role of the CSIR is to
conduct research and development as a partner of South African
industry, to support quality decision-making in the public and
private sectors and to provide technology solutions that improve the
quality of life in urban and rural developing communities.  The
Division's purpose is to provide
the technology required to support competitive forestry and wood
products industries, effective policies and decisions regarding
forestry, natural resources, the environment, and rural upliftment.

We require the following person to join our Forest Productivity team
in the Eastern Transvaal:


RESEARCHER: FOREST NUTRITION

The position of an experienced researcher with a proven track record
in the field of Forest Nutrition involves:

*   Implementation and management of nutrition trials.
*   Development of site specific nutrient models for pines and eucalypts
*   Implementation of results in the form of site specific fertilizer
recommendations and as  a component of a plantation decision support
system.
*   Formulation of a strategy that will ensure the long term
sustainability of plantation forestry.

The incumbent must possess a sound understanding of nutrient cycling
and processes, have modelling and statistical skills and be able to
apply this knowledge in a meaningful manner.

The successful candidate must have qualifications and experience in
the appropriate field, demonstrated client and market orientation,
negotiating and other skills appropriate to the contract research
environment and the ability to inspire and guide colleagues and
subordinates.

in the field of Growth and Yield
involves:

*   Implementation and management of spacing and thinning trials and
sampling  systems (PSP's);
*   Management of an extensive database
*   Development of forest growth models
*   Assisting with the implementation of results within growth
simulation and optimization  software
    packages;
*   Development of future strategies and products that will ensure
that the project will address market  needs and sustain itself.

The incumbent must possess an in depth knowledge of mensuration,
forest biometry, growth and yield modelling, harvest scheduling,
forest finances and computerized management planning systems.  At
least three years experience in actively developing growth and yield
models covering various modern modelling techniques is a
prerequisite.

The successful candidate must have qualifications and experience in
the appropriate field, demonstrated client and market orientation,
negotiating and other skills appropriate to the contract research
environment and the ability to inspire and guide colleagues and
subordinates.
