I've been working in tropical Asian countries for the past few years
helping to establish large-scale permanent forest plots that can provide
spatially explicit demographic data on the majority of species in a given
study site. The plots are therefore very large (up to 50-ha) and include
thousands of trees, up to 350,000. Five sites are well-developed in Asia.
The data sets derived from these plots are all exactly comparable
because they were developed with identical techniques and supervised
by the asme cooperative arrangments.

In November, I'm hoping to bring to Singapore the key people from the
sites who will be responsible for hands-on computer based analysis of the
data. We hope to cover in three days some of the basic elements of
single and multiple species analysis. We will be using 18 486-PC's linked
to a VAX, to sit side by side and go over a number of analytical
programs. The substance of the work will be to individually repeat a
worked analysis using a test data set from Bukit Timah Reserve in
Singapore. The goal is then to send the analysts home with a book of
worked examples so that they can repeat the same studies using their
own data.

The basic outline of the 3-days will be to repeat published analyses
relevant to these kinds of data, showing the participants how the original
authors did their work on the computer, and how it can be repeated or
modified.

The lworkshop is short, but there is still room for additional analyses and
worked examples. I would be happy to hear from anyone who has a
particular type of analysis that has been used in a published artical, and
would be willing to explain their technique in a user-friendly language . If
it is suitable to these kinds of data sets, I would be pleased to pass it
along to the participants, even if there is insufficient time to go over it
together on the computer. They could then contact you directly if the
desired further detail.

I will be out of touch (in the Philippines) until August 20, but will reply to
any e-mail or fax messages at that time.

The fax number here is: 65-469-8952

Thank you.
