Re: Help!-need mapped stand data

Mike,

It seems as if you have bitten of quite a bit !!! The research that
you propose is quite interesting. IMHO there is not enough thought that is
given to spatial autocorrelation in much of the literature that is out
there. Of course on the other hand, as you are well aware by now, GIS and
spatial analysis are both data hungry projects... If you need a "quick and
dirty" dataset for your analysis, try SOFIA (Southern Forest Inventory
Analysis) it is mapped of points every 3 miles. (that would make landscape
level kriging quite easy). SOFIA collects many of the parameters you are
interested in but it is limited to the south eastern states ... I gues you
cant get every thing.

I would be highly suspect of all and any data that comes across your
desk that you personally did not collect... YOU HAVE NO IDEA what happens in
the field .. That is not to say of course that anyone does their field work
irresponsible but take anything that you did not collect with a grain of
salt.

I would appreciate more discussion on aspects of spatial
autocorrelation and forestry, I believe it is a topic that we all must
address eventually...
