I'm working on a project which involves finding methods to even the flow of deliveries to a pulp mill throughout the year. We're specifically looking at spruce and balsam fir in the upper Great Lakes region of the U.S. These tending to be low ground species here, the significant problem is getting enough fresh-cut wood in the summer. If anyone, anywhere out there, has pointers, references or contacts (studies, operators, equipment, proceedings, land managers, etc) for responsible techniques of harvesting timber on wet ground, I'd love to hear about them. Alternative suggestions which would allow us to avoid operating on soft ground altogether are also welcome. Stockpiling winter-cut wood has led to quality control problems. I'd be happy to summarize any responses and repost to the list. -todd -- K.T. Wieringa ktw@solaria.sol.net Ironwood, MI
