Dear Colleagues, I have recieved the following request from Ms Julia Burnet an archaeologist who has been excavating sites in Cyprus; 'I'm writing to request your help or advice in tracking down information needed for a paper I'm presenting at "Res Maritimae" in October. The information relates to various qualities of Cypriot (or Mediterranean) tree species: Pinus brutia, Cupressus sempervirens, Cedrus brevifolia, Juniperus phonecia, Quercus lucitancia and Platanus orientalis. Things I need to know include wood weight, specific gravity and strength, moisture content, shrinkage and swelling, resistance to decay, flexability and breakage strains. A tall order I'm afraid. However I would be most grateful if you could provide a few pointers'. I have found some relevant information for Julia in the Wood Science textbook by Tsoumis and in the 'Wood Handbook'. However, if anyone else has information on the properties of Cypriot wood species I would be grateful if you could send it to me. I will summarise any replies and make them available to people on the network. Yours sincerely Dr Philip Evans, ANU Dept.
