Hello:
I work on natural resources issues for Ralph Nader and the Taxpayer Assets
Project. TAP is concerned with the management and control of publicly
owned assets from broadcast spectrum to the Internet backbone to national
forests and the Agriculture Department's database AGRICOLA (which we
believe should be free to online users, as is the SEC's EDGAR database).
I would like to address the timber industry's argument that America has
more trees now than ever before. I understand there are less forests,
lack of diversity = lack of stability, but I would like some
information, possibly studies, on the ills of planting monoculture tree
farms as opposed to regenerating forests or perhaps analagous
situations. I am interested in the issues of regeneration failure,
susceptibility to disease, bug infestation or fire, soil depletion,
increased need for pesticides and herbicides and effects on riparian
health. I am looking for observations and references.
Thank You
Ned Daly
