The Rocky Mountain Forest and Range Experiment Station, Ft. Collins, Colorado,
has 3 more RPA assessment papers for distribution.

 (1) General Technical Report RM-231, "Effects of subdivision and access
restrictions on private land recreation opportunities," by Cordell, English and
Randall. 1993. 21 p. A study on subdivision indicates that subdivision has a
negative impact on access for people who do not have a direct relationship with
the owners. Subdivision, however, has a negligible effect on actual amount of
use. Access restrictions, such as leasing or posting, however, seem to have an
overall positive effect on availability and use. As a result, previous
assumptions about the effects of subdivision and access restrictions will have
to be re-examined.

(2) General Technical Report RM-232, "Technology change and the economics of
silvicultural investment," by Haight. 1993. 18 p. Financial analyses of
intensive and low-cost reforestation options are conducted for two predominant
timber types in the United States: loblolly pine stands with hardwood
competition in the South, and Douglas-fir and red alder stands in the Pacific
Northwest. Results suggest that low-cost regeneration options may satisfy both
economic and environmental objectives that are difficult to attain with
intensive forest practices.

(3) General Technical Report RM-237, "Private forest investment and softwood
production in the U.S. South," by Wear. 1993. 12 p. A capital accounting
approach is used to measure the net effects of land area change, forest type
conversion, and direct investment on timber assets in the U.S. South from 1952
until 1992. The resulting measure of net forest investment indicates asset
growth on the lands held by forest industry but net disinvestment on all other
private lands. Results also reflect uncertainty about investment and production
from this latter group. The historical analysis informs projections of forest
investment to the year 2040.
