Forest Netters: I am thinking of changing one or both of the silvicultural textbooks used for a 3rd year forestry class at the University of British Columbia. We currently use D.M. Smith's 8th (1986) edition of "The Practice of Silviculture" for both parts of a 2 semester course, with Lavender et al.'s (1990) "Regenerating British Columbia's Forests" (modelled after Cleary et al.'s 1978 "Regenerating Oregon's Forests) for the first (regeneration emphasis) half as well. Both of the above books are adequate, but (of course) show a strong preference for timber values and "clear-cut, site-prep., plant, and space" approaches. I am looking for something that puts stronger emphases on stand assessment and prescription within a landscape context, perhaps even stand manipulation for ecosystem management. Any suggestions? I'd also be curious to hear which texts other silviculture instructors utilize, and the reasons for their choices. Thanks to all.
