May 2, 1994 Dear colleague: We are interested in any information that you may have regarding Miconia calvescens (Melastomataceae), particularly in reference to its potential as an invasive weed. We are concerned about the potentially devastating effect that this tree could have on the native ecosystems in Hawai'i. We are currently collaborating with the State of Hawai'i with the goal of long-term control in the Hawaiian Islands, where it has become naturalized in some areas. Any information about potential control methods, or information regarding any observations of this plant in its natural habitat would be most appreciated. In addition, any information regarding this plant's naturalization in other areas (such as Sri Lanka) would be valuable. Best regards, Arthur C.
