POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR AIR & STREAM IMPROVEMENT (NCASI)
CORVALLIS, OREGON, MARCH 1994

DUTIES: NCASI is accepting applications for a research scientist	osition.
The successful applicant will perform scientific investigations as part of
NCASI's support to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Global
Climate Research Program (GCRP) in Corvallis.  Position location is the EPA
Environmental Research Laboratory located on the campus of Oregon State
University.  The Laboratory's mission is to assess ecological effects of
major national and global environmental issues.  The incumbent will assist
in ongoing projects involving: 1) assessments of the role of forest
ecosystem management on global carbon dynamics; and 2), validation of
tree-level physiological research findings and parameterization of global
vegetation models through forestry field research.  Near-term emphasis will
be on tropical forest ecosystems, specifically southern Mexico.

The position is considered a career development assignment for a minimum of
one year, with an option to renew for additional years depending upon
performance and continued funding under an existing assistance agreement.
A post-doctoral arrangement would be typical.

QUALIFICATIONS: The incumbent must have technical expertise and training in
terrestrial systems ecology, forestry, or a related natural resource
science.  An earned PhD, or Masters degree with equivalent experience, is
required, as are familiarity with ecological carbon modeling and GIS
methods.  Spanish language skills and international experience are
desirable attributes.

Responsibilities include carbon dynamics modeling, research project
development, independent investigative work, innovative data analysis, and
interaction with peers, including GIS and remote sensing specialists and
EPA project managers.  Publication in the peer-reviewed literature is
required.  Effective interpersonal communication and teamwork abilities
must be demonstrated.
