From: Marianne Dugan <mdugan> Subject: Fire/ecology and forest arson experts needed Hello folks: I'm working on an appeal of the Warner Creek arson fire "recovery project," which includes a substantial salvage logging sale (9 million board feet). We're trying to locate experts on the role of fire in forest ecology who could provide some insight into the relationship between fire damage in forests and Northern spotted owl viability. A second, connected issue is whether the "Resistance to Control" (RTC) factor used by the Forest Service is a proper measure of habitat viability. (RTC is a 1 to 10 scale measuring how hard it will be to control future fires). Third, in the plan the F.S. excluded the arson issue from significant issues to be addressed. We are looking for experts (sociologists, that type) who have studied the economic motive for arson in forests. There was a great article on this in Mother Jones but it did not identify any people who have been able to help us out on this. I realize these are somewhat vague outlines of our concerns, but do any of you have any insights into these issues and/or know of fire ecology experts who would? We will be needing this information very soon, so any thoughts or suggestions you might could give quickly would be greatly welcome.
