The Use of Clearcutting to Mimic Natural Disturbance by Fire Last week i posted the following message to the fmdss-l@pnfi.forestry.ca list and received a small number of responses. I decided to post it to this list in the hope that I might reach a larger audience. **** ORIGINAL POSTING ***** In the Monday March 28, 1994 issue of the Globe and Mail, J.P. Kimmins described his participation in a symposium in which speakers discussed clearcutting and natural disturbance. He said "They concluded that in many forests, clearcutting, done appropriately, provides the closest mimic to natural disturbance." I am often asked, in my capacity as a forest fire management specialist, how closely clearcutting mimics natural fire. I am not a fire ecologist, but I am not aware of any comprehensive investigations of the extent to which clearcutting mimics natural fire. I find it very difficult to answer such questions. I would appreciate assistance in identifying publications that document the extent to which clearcutting mimics natural fire in boreal forest ecosystems.
