--- Forwarded message follows --- From: reflib@enh.nist.gov Subject: Does anybody here know about trees in Michigan? Date: Sun, 27 Mar 1994 08:09:52 GMT I am posting a question to this group because of a recent thread that led from cutting down trees to morel mushrooms. At least one person who posted seemed to know about the morels that grow in northern Michigan in the areas in which trees were cut down, and therefore must know something about forests in northern Michigan. I am a native of Benzie county in that area, and am writing some local history. I want to say something about the beautiful hardwood forests of today that have replaced the stumplands that the lumbermen left behind in Benzie and Leelanau counies. It is my impression that the hardwoods were not in any way a natural second growth, but were planted in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. I am trying to verify this. I have written to a CCC Alumni organization in Jefferson Barracks, MO, and to an officer in the organization who lives in Grayling, MI, but so far have had no response. Can anybody help? mnelson@nist.gov
