Hello
The Austrian Forest Inventory established more then 5000 permanent
sample plots with three different sizes in order to ensure an optimal
design.
Using several area sizes on a particular plot rises important
problems if regional interpretations are of interest and a plot is
affected by an so appearing edge effect (mean values, standard
deviation). These effects may lead to insignificant statistical
results.
Paper : 'The Problem of Divided Sample Plots Due to the Edge Effect'
by H. Hasenauer et al.
