the paper entitled:

SUSTAINABLE LAND USE SYSTEMS IN THE PHILIPPINES: SOME LESSONS LEARNED

Dr. Percy E. Sajise, a noted Filipino ecologist, is a professor at
the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) and the Director
of the SEAMEO Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in
Agriculture (SEAMEO SEARCA), both located in Los Banos, Laguna,
Philippines.

Dr. Sajise is an internationally recognized scientist and
environmentalist. A graduate of Cornell University (PhD and MS in
plant ecology) and UPLB, he has worked with various international
academic and donor organizations in at least 17 countries in Asia,
Africa, Europe, and America. He has had 20 years of practical
experience in program planning, personnel management, and financial
planning and management.

Currently, he is an associate fellow of the Sustainable Agriculture
Program, International Institute for Environment and Development;
and a member of the academic committees of the Leiden University in
the Netherlands, Australian National University, and University of
Guelph in Canada. He is also a member of the International Advisory
Council on the Economic Development of Hainan in Harmony with
Nature, China and the Global Technical Committee, Sustainable
Agricultural and Natural Resources and Management.

Dr. Sajise heads the Southeast Asian Universities Agroecosystem
Network (SUAN), a network of seven university-based institutes,
centers, and programs based in China, Indonesia, the Philippines,
Thailand, and Vietnam with strong ties with the Program on
Environment at the East-West Center, Hawaii, USA. (SUAN's main
thrust is to develop methodologies and approaches for the study of
biodiversity conservation, sustainable agroecosystem management,
and rehabilitation of critical lands.)

He served as the Asian Representative in 1985 of the Scientific
Advisory Group, International Union of Biological Sciences, Decade
of the Tropical Biology and Fertility Program; and as Committee
Member of the Advisory Board, Marginal Land International Symposium
conducted by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural
Research (ACIAR) in 1991.

Dr. Sajise is likewise involved in many national bodies working on
sustainable development and environmental conservation. These
include being the President of the Environmental Education Network
of the Philippines (EENP); Board Member of the Foundation for the
Advancement of Man and His Environment (FAME) and Rural Systems
Development Foundation; and Chairman of the Environmental Task
Force of the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry, and
Natural Resources Research and Develpment (PCARRD).
