Mr. Matthew Weinberg is an analyst with the Energy and Materials
Program at the United States Congressional Office of Technology
Assessment (OTA). His principal areas of focus are environmental and
energy policy. He recently directed a study for the Senate Energy
Committee examining the potential commercial and environmental
benefits of a new class of biologically derived materials. Prior to
this, he co-authored a study--Green Products By Design: Choices for a
Cleaner Environment--for the House Committees on Science, Space and
Technology and on Energy and Commerce, examining the environmental
implications of trends in manufacturing and product design. He is
currently working on a piece that explores various renewable energy
options in the transportation sector. Before coming to OTA in 1990,
Mr. Weinberg spent 6 years in the semiconductor industry where he
received 5 patents in the area of microelectronic devices. He
received the M.S. and B.S. degrees in electrical engineering in 1983
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His graduate work
focused on nonequilibrium effects in superconducting materials.
