The European Forest Institute and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission are sponsoring an International Workshop on "Designing a System of Nomenclature for European Forest Mapping" 13-15 June 1994, European Forest Institute, Joensuu, Finland. The purpose is to define and design an appropriate nomenclature system for a pan-European georeferenced forest information system and will provide a forum to discuss the isssues of new informatoin needs, exsiting information, and strategies for data supply, existing defintions, technical requirements for the facilities, etc. firstly from the point of view of their respective countries, and secondly on a European-scale. Remote sensing, combined with other data is a potential source of informaton. However a pre-requisite is to identify clearly the data layers needed at the European level.
