Cooperation on special literature search and comments

SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR COOPERATION ON SPECIAL LITERATURE SEARCH AND COMMENTS

Dear colleague,

IUFRO has received an invitation from FAO to participate in a meeting
related to UNCED Agenda 21, Chapter 13, entitled "Managing Fragile
Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development".

Agenda item 3 on the "Presentation of Ongoing Programmes of Agencies and
Organizations" will be of particular concern for IUFRO. On behalf of the FAO
as Task Manager, Tage Michaelsen - by the way, he is SD of IUFRO's S1.04-00
- is asking for contributions to an "annotated/commented library search
printout or catalogue" of mountain-related activities. "Mountain" areas,
according to FAO's definition, can be described with the keywords UPLANDS;
STEEP LANDS; HIGHLANDS; SLOPING LAND; HIGH ALTITUDE; MOUNTAIN; ALTIPLANO;
ALPINE; ANDEAN; HIMALAYAN; and others. The suggested time frame for the
search is 1980 to 1993.

Although IUFRO does not have any projects particularly concerned with the
management of fragile ecosystems, important research data and publications
have accumulated in IUFRO meetings. We would like to ask you for your
assistance to be able to give an excellent presentation of these data and
provide our representative at FAO, Prof. Morandini, with relevant background
details.

Other agenda items of main importance:
4 - Discussion of Main Issues and Priorities: comments would be highly
    appreciated|
5 - Upcoming Events of Importance
8 - Yardsticks and milestones in the Implementation of Chapter 13

On the list of invitations, IUFRO is treated as an international
non-governmental organization together with IUCN, CGIAR, WWF International
and others. The following UN organizations have also been invited: ILO,
UNESCO, WHO, WB, WMO, UNIDO, IAEA, UNCTAD, UNDP, UNEP, UNICEF, etc.
Inter-governmental organizations such as the ADB, the Inter-American
Development Bank and ICIMOD are on the list as well.

The ad-hoc inter-agency meeting will take place in Rome from 21-22 March,
1994. This leaves us a very short time, indeed. Nevertheless, I hope that
you will be ready to cooperate: please mail any relevant information such as
discussion drafts, comments, listed titles of IUFRO Proceedings, etc. to
Prof. Riccardo Morandini, Istituto Sperimentale per la Selvicoltura, Viale
S. Margherita 80, 52100 Arezzo, Italy, FaxNo. +39-575-35 34 90 (by e-mail
use the IUFRO Secretariat's address X0221DAA@AWIUNI 11.BITNET), as soon as
possible.

The IUFRO Secretariat will, of course, provide all those who will send
contributions with a long version of the meeting report. A very big thankyou
for your cooperation|

Yours sincerely,

Heinrich Schmutzenhofer
IUFRO Secretary
