We only teach these formula methods in a cursory manner to give a
general idea of the historical development of timber harvest scheduling
techniques.  They simply are not adequate for dealing with the complex
dynamics of real forests.  Furthermore, these formulas can never
account for the other values and demands placed on a forest, such as
wildlife habitat, water quality, and ecosystem viability.
