Colleagues,
can anyone answer the following questions:
1) is it possible to contribute to newsgroups by e-mail (our software
allows only to read the messages but not to send them)?
2) if it is possible, where can I find the proper INTERNET e-mail addresses
of newsgroups. Is there any directory (like gopher etc.)? I am interested in
addresses of newsgroups relating to forestry and ecology (like sci.bio.ecology,
bionet.plants etc.).
3) how is it possible to subscribe to these newsgroups by e-mail?

You may also consider exploring Usenet forums. There are
a few Usenet forums dealing with environmental sciences.
You only need a Usenet compatible software... most of them
are shareware. I use Internews from the Darthmout College.

The electronic Mailing list for Forest Scientists, launched in
the automn of 1992, has now motre than 250 subscriber worldwide.
Since September 1992, when this service was started, there have
been about 160 messages. The material consists mostly of special
pieces of information. There has also been an increasing number
of job announcements. A bi-monthly posting with "questions that
are frequently asked" is being planed, and also summaries of
important events and meetings prepared by WP-leaders and IUFRO
headquarters.
COMMANDS
You command the listserver program by sending mail to it. You can
joint the list by sending a subscription to:
mailserver@nic.funet.fi
The subscription should contain only four words on one line:
subscribe forest <your first name><your last name>
The mailserver interprets your mailing address from the mail you
send. Correspondingly, you may unsubscribe from the list with the
following message to mailserver: unsubscribe forest.
You can get information about the services by sending the
following one line, one word message to the mailserver: help. For
instance, one useful command that is apparent from the help is:
review forest, which returns you a list of the subscribers.

For those of you not familiar with veronica _TITLE_ searches you
can
get at that capability by connecting to the College of Natural
Resources gopher at the University of Minnesota
(mercury.forestry.umn.edu port 70) through the path "Search for
Information/Searching on the Net/Gopherspace Searches using
Veronica"
I just did such a title search using "forest or forestry or
natural
resources" and got about 200 hits. A subset of the "forestry"
ones
(34) are below. gophers are one simple way of coordinating
information resources and it is clear from the list below that
several organizations/institutions are already doing that. The
College of Natural Resources tries to keep links to as many
natural
resources related gophers as we can find: connect to our gopher
and
browse "/Other Interesting Gophers"

KEY (very roughly): After the INFO label is the gopher's common name,
followed by a directory name (and possibly some other information),
followed by the name of the computer on which the gopher is running
and the port gopher is using (you most likely only need these last
two items to connect your gopher client to the information server).
