An international seminar
organized by the European Forest Institute:
INTEGRATING ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES INTO FOREST PLANNING
25-30 July, 1994
Tohmajarvi, Finland
THEME OF THE SEMINAR
Multiple-use and environmental values, such as landscape and
biodiversity, are becoming more and more important in forestry
planning in all European countries. Consequently, there is an
urgent need to operationalize these new objectives and
constraints to make it possible to integrate them in forest
planning calculations.
An international seminar on integrating environmental values
into forest planning, which is going to be organized by the
European Forest Institute on 25-30 July 1994, gives an
excellent starting point to new research projects in the fields
of multiple-use planning and environmental impact assessment.
The duration of the seminar is 6 days, and it will be divided
into three parts. First, the present state of art is presented
by international experts. Second, the participants will prepare
case plans that integrate environmental impact assessment and
the multiple objectives into the planning process, using a
planning system developed for these purposes. Third, the
participants will discuss and plan (in working groups) new
research projects and study plans in the fields of multiple use
forestry and environmental impact assessments in forestry.
LECTURERS
Professor Dennis Dykstra, Northern Arizona University
(presently: FAO Rome, Italy);
Ass. Professor G.A. Mendoza, University of Illinois;
Professor Timo Pukkala, University of Joensuu, Finland;
Special Researcher Jyrki Kangas, Finnish Forest Research
Institute.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The seminar is aimed at researchers specializing in a field
concurrent with the theme of the seminar, particularly at PhD
students. Forest managers interested in scientific approach are
also welcome. The desired number of participants is 10-12.
PARTICIPATION FEE
150 ecus.
Note: Some funding will be available from EFI for covering
travel etc. expenses for 3-5 participants of the seminar. Those
applying for funding from EFI should present a budget plan
denoting the amount applied from EFI and from possible other
sources.
VENUE
The seminar will be held in a traditional North-Karelian farm
near the Russian border. As the venue - while offering all
modern facilities - is situated in the middle of the boreal
forest by a lake, it provides an ideal place for environmental
forest planning.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS
30 April, 1994. Application forms and more detailed information
on the seminar is available by request from the EFI.
Participants will be selected among the applicants by the end
of May.
