Position:
Project Co-Manager/Woodlands Mountain Institute Representative,
Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Area Project, Nepal
Background:
Woodlands Mountain Institute, a non-profit institution
based in Franklin, West Virginia and with project
offices in Kathmandu and Khandbari, Nepal, announces
the search for a qualified Project Co-Manager/
Representative to work in the Makalu-Barun Project of
Woodlands Mountain Institute's Himalaya Program.
The Makalu-Barun Project works with local people,
user groups, and national park staff in eastern
Nepal to establish an innovative model of community
development and environmental protection in the Makalu-
Barun National Park and Conservation Area.
Responsibilities:
The Makalu-Barun Project Co-Manager/Representative will
work in close collaboration with the Nepalese
counterpart Project Manager to plan and implement the
programs of the Makalu-Barun National Park and
Conservation Area. Responsibilities include: Managing
Woodlands Mountain Institute's assistance to the
project; serving as the Institute's representative in
Nepal; overseeing preparation and expenditure of
budgets; supervising the Institute's accounts;
maintaining close and effective relationships with
Government personnel and donor representatives;
preparing or supervising regular progress and financial
reports; providing technical advisory services on
program implementation, including park management,
participatory community development, environmental
impacts, and multi-disciplinary scientific research;
and developing linkages for and providing assistance to
Woodlands Mountain Institute's other programs in Nepal.
The Project Co-Manager will be supervised by the
Institute's Director of Asian Environmental Programs.
The Co-Manager and Nepali Project Manager serve on the
Project Executive Committee under the Government of
Nepal's Department of National Parks and Wildlife
Conservation. The Co-Manager will supervise the
Institute's Community Development Specialist and other
staff directly employed by Woodlands Mountain Institute
in Nepal.
The Project Co-Manager will also assist in developing
and running the Institute's other programs in the
region, including associated activities in Nepal. As a
staff member of Woodlands Mountain Institute, he/she
will participate in developing linkages to the
Institute's other programs and be involved in the
professional and social growth of Woodlands as a whole.
Posting:
The Project Co-Manager/Representative will be posted to
the Makalu-Barun National Park and Conservation Area
Project headquarters. This office is currently located
in Khandbari, but will likely be shifted within the
project area as soon as possible. Responsibilities
will require frequent field travel by foot in remote
and difficult locations, as well as frequent travel to
Kathmandu, where he/she will likely have to spend up to
30% of the time.
Qualifications:
Candidates should hold a Master's or Doctorate degree
in a relevant natural resource management or social
science field, and should have a minimum of five years
of project implementation and management experience
with international development projects outside their
native country. Experience should include negotiation
with government representatives, supervision of staff,
development of workplans, personnel management, and
maintaining donor relations. Preference will be given
to candidates who have held senior management positions
in community development or environmental projects in
Asian countries. Nepali language ability is useful,
but fluency is not required. Interpersonal and cross-
cultural skills appropriate to the participatory
project approach are essential. Willingness to travel
and live in the remote project setting of eastern Nepal
is essential. Applications from all nationalities,

Compensation and terms of employment:
The selected candidate will be offered a two year
contract with Woodlands Mountain Institute.
Compensation and terms of employment will be according
to the Policies and Procedures Manual of Woodlands
Mountain Institute. As a non-profit institution,
Woodlands Mountain Institute seeks highly committed
staff with a professional service orientation and a
potentially long term commitment to a non-profit
career. Salary will be negotiable depending on the
qualifications and experience of the successful
candidate. Salary will likely range between $40,000
and $50,000 annually, plus benefits.
