        University Lectureship in Forestry
   Population and/or ecological forest genetics

We wish to appoint a forest scientist to carry out research and teaching
in the assessment and interpretation of diversity and dynamics of tree
populations. The rapid advances in molecular techniques and their
applications are revolutionising our capacity to recognise and interpret
diversity in forest ecosystems. In forest systematics, population
genetics and ecology, the established and emerging molecular
technologies are beginning to be employed to resolve fundamental
scientific questions, and to address issues of concern to natural
resource policymakers and managers.

The Oxford Forestry Institute within the University's Department of
Plant Sciences has strong research programmes in the population
genetics and ecology of forest trees, in the systematics of forest taxa,
and in the conservation and use of forest genetic resources. These
programmes currently emphasize a number of tropical taxa and
ecosystems, and are supported by a dedicated molecular genetics
laboratory and other facilities. We are seeking a forest scientist to
progress research and teaching in the assessment and interpretation of
diversity and dynamics of forest tree populations. Their research
programme would be expected to integrate closely with existing
priorities of the Institute's forest genetics and ecology groups; strong
quantitative skills would be advantageous. Teaching responsibilities
would involve a substantial contribution to the MSc in Forestry, and
to core and option classes for the undergraduate degree in Biology.
The appointee would also be expected to contribute to the Institute's
scientific advisory activities, many of which involve collaboration with
partners in less-developed countries and ini the development agencies.

Preliminary enquiries should be addressed via email, airmail or fax to
