The Stand Management Cooperative (SMC) is an integrated research
program in silviculture, forest nutrition, wood quality and
modeling in western Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. The
primary mission of the cooperative is to develop techniques for
planning and evaluating intensive stand management practices. The
SMC staff collects, synthesizes, and models data on responses to
silvicultural treatments for tree growth, stand development, and
product quality and value.

LOCATION:   College of Forest Resources, University of
Washington, Seattle

DUTIES:    Perform programming and database management tasks
associated with the management and analysis of a large
cooperative forest research database.  Typical duties focus on
various aspects of data collection, entry, editing and validation
as well as database updates, retrievals and design.  Assist in
preparation and maintenance of documentation.  Perform systematic
backups of all systems including data and programs.  Evaluate
computer hardware and software requirements, arrange for and
install upgrades and provide training for project staff.  Assist
project staff with preparation of reports and presentations, and
participate in technical meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:    Bachelor's degree;  graduate degree in
forestry or related discipline desirable.  Fundamental expertise
in scientific database management; experience with SIR and
Paradox desirable.  Experience with mainframe computers,
microcomputers, and peripherals with demonstrated competence
using UNIX, VAX/VMS and MS DOS is required.  Six months' recent
experience with the C programming language is required. 
Knowledge of forest growth and yield terminology, measurements,
and calculations; familiarity with SAS is desirable.  Opportunity
for further graduate study available.

RANK and SALARY:  Systems Analyst / Programmer II; salary
commensurate with qualifications (range $2245-2865/month).
