	(The vacancy is open to male and female candidates. Applications from

Duties and responsibilities:
---------------------------
Under general supervision of the Senior Forestry Officer
(Forest Resources Appraisal and Monitoring):

- define and revise classifications and guidelines for
  global forest resources assesment;

- collect, review, prcess and disseminate information on
  forest resources of developing countries and store it in
  the Forest Resouces Information System (FORIS) of FAO;

- maintain and develop the global database (FORIS) and
  ensure the continuous updating of information;

- prepare reports on te status of forest resources, 
  periodically and on request;

- participate in the country capacity building activities
  of the forest resources assessment programme;

- collaborate with national correspondents and other
  suitable contacts to enhance and analyse forest resources data;

- perform other related duties as required.


Qualifications and experience - Essential:
-----------------------------------------
- University degree in forestry.

- Seven years of progressively responsible professional experience
  in the application of databases in a forest inventory environment
  and i n the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
  technology in the field of natural resources studies.

- Working knowledge (level C) of English, French or Spanish and
  limited knowledge (level B) of one of the other two. (see below)

- Initiative, sense of responsibility, ability to plan and organize
  work, to write clearly and concisely; courtesy, tact and ability
  to establish and maintain effective working relationships with
  people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Willingness
  to use word processing equipment.


Qualifications and experience - Desirable
-----------------------------------------
- Postgraduate studies in related fields. Field work experience
  in a developing country.

Essential Qualifications

Academic qualifications
-----------------------
Please give details of the level of university degrees obtained,
indicating the subject(s) of specialization, the year of award and the
name and location of the academic institution. You will be expected
eventually to request the university to provide FAO with a written
resume of academic work.

Knowledge of languages
----------------------
Please list the languages with which you are familiar, beginning with
your mother tongue, indicating the extent of your knowledge as:

excellent or
good         = working knowledge (level C)

fair or
slight       = limited knowledge (level B)

With a working knowledge (level C) of a language, you will be
expeceted to work independently using the language required, to
prepare a variety of written communications (correspondence, reports,
working papers, etc.), to participate actively in meetings and in
work-related discussions, etc.

With a limited knowledge of a language, you will be expected to follow
work-related discussions or meetings, even though you may wish to
intervene in another official language. You will be expected to
participate in simple conversations, to use the telephone, to read and
understand work-related texts and to write simple communications, etc.

Experience
----------
Starting with your most recent position, please state the name and
