Estimating Upper Stem Bark Thicknesses - How?

Does anyone have any ideas on how the thickness of bark along the boles of
standing trees might me measured remotely?  

We URGENTLY need a breakthrough in this area to improve the reliability of
underbark volume estimates derived from inventory based on dendrometry.
