The Dendrome project provides some resources. We have a
Gopher server at s27w007.pswfs.gov port 70. Our project
is aimed at creating a central repository for data and
tools for research in the molecular biology of forest
tree genomes.
We are using the ACEDB software to compile forest tree
genome mapping data from any laboratory that wishes to
participate. This database software employs the X11
windowing system to provide a graphical interface for
browsing the data. We will be announcing a beta release
of TreeGenes (the database) soon. All of the
autoradiograms that were used to create a base map of
P. taeda are on line and may be accessed using mosaic,
gopher, anonymous ftp or the TreeGenes software.
The project is sponsoring a tree genome mapping workshop
at Plant Genome II in San Diego in January.
We are also compiling a list of all Forest Genetists.
This list will result in a mailing, the results of which
will be used for an official IUFRO list. A very
preliminary version of the list is WAIS indexed and
is available via the gopher server mentioned above.
The Principal Investigator for the Dendrome project is
David B. Neale (dbn@s27w007.pswfs.gov). We are
headquartered at the Pacific Southwest Research Station
of the USDA Forest Service in Albany, CA and at the
Institute of Forest Genetics in Placerville, CA. Funding
is provided by USDA ARS Plant Genome Database project.
