Subject: Forestry-related network information resources
----------------------------------------------
Dear collegues,
This is a short report about the answers received to my request for
information of September 29. Thanks a lots for your help.
To summarize, there are several forestry sources on the networks,
but the results of a search depends largely on the specific topic
within forest science. Original forestry sources which are publicly
available are rather scarce. Hot issues from related subject fields
like "global change" or "biodiversity" contribute a lot to the
overall coverage in forest science. In many cases, forestry
information is only a part of a more general information system
(agriculture, natural resources). Many services of North America
which I could find by an index search were, in the end, not
accessible from Europe.
However, according to several messages received, we will see more
services with a direct focus on forestry in the near future (1994).
The producers will announce their new services on this mailing list.
The present scarceness of sources could also have an advantage: the
forest science community still has time to build up their own
coordinated "Subject Tree". Such a table of contents or index would
guide the users to the available information resources across the
various networks and interfaces. Ideally, one would find there
information about interesting discussion groups as well as specialized
electronic archives or libraries.
A selection of some network resources concerning forestry are
compiled in a second message.
