I am interested in techniques for growth-ring analysis in fast-grown eucalypt plantations, mainly Eucalyptus globulus and E.nitens. The main problems are timber hardness and low visibility of annual rings. Specifically, I am looking for info/suggestions/ideas on: a) Possibility of extracting increment cores. Special tools, procedures. The wood is hard and growth stresses are common. It is difficult to drill with ordinary increment borers, and often these are impossible to remove afterwards. b) Dyes and surface treatment (sanding, machining) to improve ring identification on cross sections. ogarcia@uchcecvm.bitnet Dr. Oscar Garcia, Instituto Forestal, Huerfanos 554, Santiago, Chile.
