Re: ISEW

The Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare (ISEW) was developed by
ecological economist Herman Daly (now at the World Bank) and theologian
(yes, theologian) John Cobb, Jr. The ISEW is described in a fair amount
of detail in a lengthy appendix to their book "FOR THE COMMON GOOD:
REDIRECTING THE ECONOMY TOWARD COMMUNITY, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND A
SUSTAINABLE FUTURE," 1989, Beacon Press, Boston, Massachusetts, USA).
The ISEW is intended to be an alternative to the GNP as an economic of
economic welfare, and corrects for some of the glaring deficiencies in
the GNP.

You may want to write directly to Herman Daly to find out about other
publications on the ISEW: The World Bank, 1818 H St., NW, Washington, DC
20433, USA.
