Dear Andrew: If you haven't satisfied your request for people with experience with the Crite rion 400, I've got a suggestion. Dr. Stephen Fairweather, formerly prof. of fo restry here at Penn State, had a loaner with which he made an evaluation. I'm not sure of the results as I was away this summer, but if you're still interest ed write me and I'll get his current mailing address. I took an advanced biometrics course with him and evaluated the optical dendrom eter on 20 stems, taking dbh and 12' measurements. The main problem was stabil ity (the instrument was heavy; kneeling helped) and misreading the reticle. Th e instrument helped me stem map trees in NW Pennsylvania during leaf-off season . Using the sensor filter and a bicycle reflector I could measure stems at nea rly 200 feet through the crotches of trees and brush. I like the instrument. With practice, one could get very proficient at using it. Good luck. DAVE. Dave McGill 111 Ferguson Building Penn State University Park, PA 16802 USA Bitnet:dwm6@psuvm.psu.edu
