I help edit a newsletter called the ITTO Tropical Forest Update which is sponsored by the International Tropical Timber Organisation. Its purpose is to promote the idea of sustainable management. It is currently distributed free of charge to 4000 subscribers in English, French and Spanish (English is published most frequently) and is now in its third year of production. I am interested in making contact with anyone on this list - in the south or the north - who has a genuine and active interest in tropical forests. Send me your postal address and I'll send you the latest issue. I would also like to hear of your particular fields on interest. For example, the next issue of the Update deals with tropical plantations - their nature, their management, and their potential role in meeting future timber demand and alleviating pressure on natural forests. Does anyone have anything to contribute? As a parting, largely rhetorical question, what would be the effect on timber supply (and thus on in-country and international trade) of reducing the world harvest of timber to sustainable levels? (Has anyone calculated numbers?) Any comments? Alistair Sarre c/o ANUTECH P/L Canberra ACT 0200 AUSTRALIA Ph 61-6-2495677 Fax 61-6-2495875
