I suspect that the or a pipe model describes the relationship between the crown
 and stem.  However, water flow should be proportional to the cross sectional a
rea of the last one or two rings not the stem. So a pipe jacket model is more a
ppropriate.  Curly Lucas was working on a "pipe" model for water movement in t
rees in the early 70's.
