Regarding the Jim Palmer's recent post about visualization of forest management. One of my colleagues here is working with Brian Orland, a landscape architect at U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Brian has developed a program that integrates a gap-based forest growth model (currently JABOWA) with a graphical display so you can cut a stand (or tree) and see the results. He has also done a lot of work with manipulating photographs to illustrate impacts of timber harvesting and insect outbreaks on stand structure. Their focus is on the effects on esthetics but these techniques could be used for other purposes as well.
