The Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) was established under the
aegis of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in 1990 to support
advances in sustainable forestry practice in the tropics through technical
aid in monitoring and analyzing selected tropical forest ecosystems, and
through both formal and informal education.
To date, CTFS supports specific studies at six sites:
Barro Colorado Island, Panama
Pasoh Forest Reserve, Peninsular Malaysia
Lambir National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia
Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand
Bukit Timah National Park, Singapore
Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka
The goals and administration of research at each site are developed by
appropriate National Research Insitutes: CTFS provides technical
assistance and support for US participation.
Intitial research and development emphasizes baseline work aimed at
floristic inventory and forest dynamic monitoring and modeling. Key
research tools are large-scale forest dynamic plots, generally 30-50 ha in
area, and including all trees greater than one cm dbh. Other developing
research areas include meteorological monitoring, wildlife studies, and
rural economics.
In December 1992, CTFS reached an agrement with NIE-NTU in
Singapore to begin a study of Bukit Timah National Park and to use an
office at NIE-NTU as a base for the regional program for Asia. Similar
regional programs will be developing for Latin America and Africa.
The educational component of CTFS, including short course, fellowships,
and technical workshops, will be further developed during 1994.
